During the years 2009-2017, conservatives like Sean Hannity and random future MAGAs were screaming that Barack Obama was “NOT MY PRESIDENT!” Rush Limbaugh even tried to rebrand Presidents’ Day to “Not My President Day” (it failed of course).
Now, when people say that Donald Trump is not our president, they lecture us that “Yes he is. He was elected by our system so he is too your president”. Republicans have remarkably short memories.
But there is a difference. That was a time when Alt-Right hysteria was so out of control that they accused Mr Obama of being born in Kenya (spread by Donald Trump himself) and of being not only an Islamic terrorist but the founder of ISIS. And gay – despite that ISIS executes gays. A time when Mitch McConnell infamously said:
The hysteria was so great it’s hard not to believe that what they meant was “A black man will never be president!”
Mr Obama never committed any impeachable offense or did anything flagrantly unconstitutional. If he had, the Republican House and Senate would certainly have impeached him. Eating Dijon mustard, wearing tan suits and saluting with a coffee cup in hand are not impeachable offenses.
Donald Trump, however …
Here are 10 reasons why our next president should be the 45th, because Trump is not a president. And no, we’re not talking about election fraud, voter suppression, Russian help or losing the popular vote. It’s not even about the crimes he was impeached for.
You see, the presidency is a two-way street. He works for the people. Trump isn’t fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a president. He’s not doing his part so we don’t have to call him president.
- 1. A president upholds, protects and preserves the Constitution. He doesn’t call it “phony” or say it “doesn’t matter” or call it “very bad” or “antiquated”.
- 2. A president doesn’t try to overturn the freedoms granted by the Bill of Rights. He doesn’t create travel bans based on religion or push for Bible lessons in public schools. He doesn’t try to ban reporters from press conferences or have his people deny coverage of his Senate trial.
- 3. A president understands that there are three branches of government. He doesn’t say “I can do anything I want”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl_gO3uOds8
- 4. A president brings the nation together. He doesn’t call people names and spread racist slurs.
- 5. A president earns the respect of other nations. He doesn’t make himself, and by association, America a laughing stock
- 6. A president listens to his intelligence agencies. He doesn’t accuse them of working against him. He acts on their advice – especially when something as vital as election security is under ongoing threat.
- 7. A president respects respects his scientists. He acts to protect the people from disasters like climate change. He doesn’t withhold help from disaster stricken Americans like Puerto Ricans. He doesn’t replace scientists with science deniers and spread lies about renewable energy to help big polluting corporations – or draw his own weather forecasts.
- 8. A president is honest with the American people. He doesn’t pass off 15000 provable lies (and counting) that makes Bush’s “weapons of mass destruction” look like a little white lie.
- 9. A president supports families. He doesn’t kidnap their kids and lock them in cages, or deport family members, leaving them without loved ones and breadwinners.
- 10. A president respects his predecessors. He doesn’t overturn their gains in health care (Obamacare), immigration (DACA), foreign affairs (nuclear treaty with Iran), and environmental protections simply because he doesn’t like the man who started them.
